Does it matter which school your child is at in Hampton?
For the qualification, no. For how a teenager feels about their results in August, it clearly does, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
Hampton has Hampton High on Hanworth Road as its state secondary, alongside two long-established independent schools, Hampton School and Lady Eleanor Holles, whose published GCSE results are among the strongest in the country.
That produces a particular local dynamic. Teenagers who live on the same street, play in the same clubs and take the same buses compare results in August against a benchmark that is not the national one. A set of grades that would be celebrated almost anywhere else gets measured against a year group where nearly everything was a 9.
The qualification does not care. A grade 6 in GCSE Maths clears the entry requirement at essentially every sixth form in the borough, and no employer has ever asked which school issued it. But a fifteen year old comparing themselves to a friend with eleven grade 9s is not making a policy argument, and telling them the grade is fine rarely lands.
The wider numbers are worth holding on to, and they are on our Richmond page. A student in the middle of the Hampton pack is, by any measure outside TW12, doing perfectly well. Grade boundaries also move each year with the cohort, set by the boards under Ofqual, so a mark is not a fixed grade.
Where tutoring genuinely helps is in making progress visible. Marked papers, tracked over weeks, give a student something concrete to look at instead of a comparison they will always lose. One more thing worth telling a teenager. Grade boundaries are set each year after the papers are marked, by the boards under the supervision of Ofqual. Nobody, tutor or school, can promise a grade 9 in advance, so treat anyone who does with suspicion.

GCSE or IGCSE, and does the difference matter?
It matters for the lessons. It does not matter for what the qualification is worth. Hampton has students sitting both, sometimes in the same family.
IGCSE and GCSE cover broadly similar ground, but the papers are structured differently, questions are worded differently, and required content occasionally differs too. A tutor working from the wrong past papers will teach useful material and still miss the target.
We teach AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC or Eduqas, plus Cambridge IGCSE where a tutor is available for that specification. If you are not sure which your child sits, the front page of any past paper they have been given will say.

When should support start?
In Year 10 if the choice is open, and at the point of the first bad mock if it is not. Waiting for a pattern to confirm itself is expensive.
Year 10 is the cheap year
A topic that stops making sense in October takes roughly one lesson to fix. The same topic in March of Year 11 takes three or four, because everything built on it has gone unreliable too.
Year 11 converts knowledge into marks
The content is largely taught. What moves the grade now is command words, showing method and clock management. Mocks become the raw material.
A November mock is a gift
It is the most accurate diagnostic a family gets for free. Acting on it in December is worth more than any amount of activity in April.
Watch the total load
Hampton students often carry ten GCSEs plus sport or music. One well-aimed weekly lesson beats three that leave no room to think.

And if the grade does not come?
Fewer students in Hampton need a resit than in most places, which can make it a lonely position rather than an unusual one. The rules are national and they are not optional.
The 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated by government in July 2026, requires any student aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 or above in maths and English to keep studying that subject. A grade 3 puts them on a GCSE route. Grade 2 or below allows GCSE or Functional Skills at level 2.
The nearest post-16 provider is Richmond upon Thames College in Twickenham, which states that its 16 to 18 students all work towards the equivalent of grade 4 or 5 or above, with classes timetabled around the main programme.
Two series, two different jobs
- November: Maths and English Language only, roughly ten weeks after results day.
- Following summer: every GCSE subject, and the right call when there is real ground to make up.
- Being made to keep studying a subject is not the same as being entered for the next exam.
- The provider decides entry timing, so ask rather than assume.

Frequently asked questions
Hampton has two of the strongest independent schools in the country. Does that affect state school students?
It affects how results feel rather than what they are worth. A grade 6 is a grade 6 to every sixth form and every employer. Living in a town where the local independent schools publish extraordinary results does not change that, though it can certainly change how a teenager talks about their own.
Do you tutor students at independent schools as well?
Yes. Independent schools often sit IGCSE rather than GCSE, so tell us which qualification and which board. The content overlaps heavily but the papers and assessment structure differ.
What is the difference between GCSE and IGCSE for tutoring purposes?
Mostly assessment structure and question style rather than raw content. A tutor teaching from GCSE past papers to an IGCSE student will get much of it right and waste the rest, which is why we ask.
Which subjects do you cover?
Maths, English Language, English Literature, Science in either form, the three sciences taught separately, Computer Science and Business Studies. History, Geography and RS depend on availability.

Check with the school directly. Academies and voluntary aided schools set their own term and holiday dates, and a household with children at different schools often ends up running two calendars at once.
