What does a grade 3 actually commit you to?
To carrying the subject forward, which most families expect. The parts that surprise people are who decides when the exam happens, and what the alternative route is.
The rule is national and it is a funding condition rather than anything a school or college chooses. The 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated by government on 24 July 2026, requires students aged 16 to 19 on a study programme who do not hold grade 4 or above in maths and English to keep studying that subject.
Then the detail that matters. A student holding grade 3 must work towards a GCSE. A student at grade 2 or below may work towards either a GCSE or Functional Skills at level 2. So the softer alternative people ask about is only available lower down, which is counterintuitive and catches families out.
The third surprise is entry. Being required to keep studying a subject is not the same as being entered for the next exam. The provider decides when a student is ready to sit it, and it is entirely normal for a student to spend the autumn term on maths and not be entered in November at all.
That last point is worth acting on rather than absorbing. Ask in the first fortnight of the new term whether your child is being put in for November, because the answer changes what the next ten weeks should look like.

- Which exam board the new provider uses, which may not be the old one.
- Whether your child is being entered in November or the following summer.
- How many taught hours a week the subject actually gets.
- Who to ask when none of the above is clear.

November or the following summer?
It depends how far short the grade was, and the honest answer is often not the one a family wants in September.
November covers Maths and English Language only. Everything else waits until the following summer. That alone settles it for a student resitting Science or a humanity.
For maths and English the calculation is about distance. November sits roughly ten weeks after August results, and ten weeks is enough to convert a near miss where the technique was nearly there. It is not enough to rebuild a subject where the foundations are genuinely missing, and attempting it produces a second disappointment in January rather than a first success.
Where a student is a long way short, the better plan is usually to aim at the summer, use the autumn to rebuild properly, and treat November as optional. That is a harder conversation in September and a much easier one the following August.

What about students still in Year 10 and Year 11?
They are the cheaper end of this, by a distance. Everything above describes what happens when the summer does not go well, and most of it is avoidable a year earlier.
Year 10
A topic that stops making sense in the autumn takes roughly one lesson to repair. The same gap found in the spring of Year 11 takes three or four, because two terms of teaching have been resting on it.
Year 10 work is quiet and diagnostic. A tutor reads recent classwork, finds where the thread was lost, and picks it up from there.
Year 11
The content is largely taught. What shifts a grade now is technique: reading the command word, showing method, and pacing a fortnight of papers sensibly.
Marked mocks are the raw material, read the way an examiner would read them.

Do Wandsworth term dates apply to your school?
Probably not, and the council says as much. Most secondaries in the borough are academies and set their own.
Wandsworth publishes a calendar for its maintained schools. For 2026/27 the autumn term runs from Wednesday 2 September to Friday 18 December 2026, with the summer term ending on Thursday 22 July 2027. The council states that "term dates for academies, foundation schools, free schools and voluntary aided schools are set by school governing bodies or academy trusts".
That is a broad exemption in a borough where academies are the norm rather than the exception, so treat the council dates as a rough guide and check the school. The government term dates finder lists them one at a time.

Frequently asked questions
My son is starting sixth form with a grade 3 in maths. What actually happens now?
He carries maths into his study programme. Government guidance updated in July 2026 puts anyone aged 16 to 19 without grade 4 in maths and English back into the subject, and a grade 3 specifically means a GCSE rather than Functional Skills.
Will he be entered for the November exam?
That is the provider’s decision, not yours or his. Being required to keep studying a subject is a different thing from being entered for the next paper, and providers routinely hold students back until the summer. Ask in the first fortnight rather than assuming.
What is the difference between a GCSE resit and Functional Skills level 2?
A GCSE is the qualification most employers and courses ask for by name. Functional Skills level 2 is a recognised alternative and only available if the student holds grade 2 or below. At grade 3 the choice is not open.
Are Wandsworth term dates the same as the neighbouring boroughs?
For maintained schools, largely yes: the 2026/27 summer term ends on Thursday 22 July 2027, the same as Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow and Hillingdon. Academies, foundation, free and voluntary aided schools set their own, and most Wandsworth secondaries are academies.
