Online GCSE Tutoring in Hornchurch

One-to-one lessons for Year 10, Year 11 and resit students, £30 per lesson

Online GCSE tutoring in Hornchurch, for core subjects and options. Business Studies is often chosen by students who want a break from maths, and the first calculation question in the Year 10 test comes as a small shock.

Business is not a maths GCSE, but it carries a guaranteed minimum of quantitative marks, and the numbers turn up inside the essay questions too. Students who ignore them tend to plateau a grade below where their written answers deserve.

This page sets out how much maths the rules require, which calculations come up, and how to turn a correct figure into full marks. The first session is free.

What Hornchurch parents ask

  • How much maths is in Business.
  • Which formulas need learning.
  • Whether weak maths rules it out.
  • Why right answers lose marks.
  • How to revise the calculations.

How much of GCSE Business is maths?

A minimum is set by the regulator, and every board has to meet it.

Ofqual’s subject level conditions for GCSE Business require that at least 10% of the total marks reward quantitative skills, at a level no lower than expected at Key Stage 3. Those skills must be assessed in a business context, not as standalone sums.

That second rule matters as much as the first. Calculations are woven into case studies, so a question might give a business’s figures and ask for a margin, then ask whether the business should expand. The number feeds the judgement.

Ten per cent is a floor. Because figures also support the evaluation questions, a student who is uncomfortable with numbers usually loses more than the quantitative marks alone.

Which calculations come up?

A short, fixed list, which is exactly why they are worth learning properly.

The Department for Education’s subject content for GCSE Business lists them: percentages and percentage changes, averages, revenue, costs and profit, gross and net profit margins, average rate of return, and cash-flow forecasts including total costs, total revenue and net cash flow.

Alongside those, students must interpret quantitative information: reading graphs and charts, comparing profitability ratios and using figures to support or challenge a business decision.

That is a manageable list. Unlike GCSE Maths, there is no unseen topic waiting at the end of the paper. A student who knows each formula, can recognise when it is needed and can explain what the result means has covered the quantitative side of the course.

Calculators, and why fluency with one matters more than the model, are covered on our Gants Hill page.

The formulas to know cold

  • Profit equals revenue minus total costs.
  • Gross profit margin.
  • Net profit margin.
  • Average rate of return.
  • Net cash flow and closing balance.

Why does a right answer still lose marks?

Because the higher marks are for what the number means, not the number itself.

A typical pattern in marked papers: the student calculates the net profit margin correctly, writes it down, and moves on. The question wanted them to say whether that margin is healthy, how it compares with last year or with a competitor, and what it means for the decision in the case study.

The fix is a habit, not more maths. After every calculation, write one sentence on what it shows. After every comparison, say which is better and why. It feels repetitive, and it is exactly what the mark scheme rewards.

The opposite mistake is just as common: a well-argued evaluation that never uses the figures provided. If the case study gives numbers, the strongest answers use them.

Hornchurch students attend schools including Campion, Sanders, Emerson Park and The Albany, with Havering Sixth Form College on Wingletye Lane for many afterwards, and Business is offered on more than one board across them.

What about resit students in Hornchurch?

English and Maths resits are what most families ask about, usually alongside a sixth form or college course.

Students finishing Year 11 without grade 4 in English or Maths continue with the subject. Under the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, grade 3 leads to a GCSE resit, while grade 2 or below allows Functional Skills level 2 instead.

A student taking a business course after GCSEs will find the same percentage and ratio work turns up again, so securing the Maths grade pays twice.

For resit students

  • Entry is the college’s decision.
  • November covers Maths and English Language.
  • Percentages and ratios recur in business courses.
  • Evening lessons available.

Frequently asked questions

How much maths is there in GCSE Business?

At least 10% of the marks must reward quantitative skills, under Ofqual’s rules for the subject. In practice the numbers also appear inside longer answers, so their influence on the grade is larger than the minimum suggests.

Which calculations come up?

Percentages and percentage change, averages, revenue, costs and profit, gross and net profit margins, average rate of return, and cash-flow forecasts. Students also have to read and interpret graphs and charts.

Is a calculator allowed in GCSE Business?

Generally yes, but check the specific paper. The calculator does the arithmetic; it does not tell the student which figures to use or what the answer means, which is where marks are usually lost.

My child is weak at maths. Should they avoid Business?

Not necessarily. The maths is at roughly Key Stage 3 level and limited to a known set of calculations. A student who learns those few formulas thoroughly can do well even if GCSE Maths is a struggle.

Why do students lose marks even when the calculation is right?

Because many questions want the figure used. A correct profit margin followed by no comment on what it shows about the business will often miss the higher marks.

Do you tutor GCSE Business Studies?

Yes, along with Maths, English, the sciences and Computer Science.

How much is a lesson?

£30 a lesson, one to one, formulas and case studies alike.

Do you have a Hornchurch centre?

No. All teaching happens online, and the business is registered in Feltham, not RM11 or RM12.
