Online GCSE Tutoring in Barkingside
Specialist one-to-one lessons for Year 10, Year 11 and resit students, £30 per lesson
Online GCSE tutoring in Barkingside, in every subject. A call we take more often than people would guess starts like this: the grades were fine until this year, and this year the class has had four different teachers.
Sometimes it is a long-term vacancy, sometimes a teacher on leave, sometimes a colleague from another department doing their best with a subject that is not theirs. The student usually notices before anyone writes home about it.
This page is about spotting that kind of gap, what it tends to leave behind, and how to close it without redoing a whole course. The first session is free.

What Barkingside parents ask
- Whether a run of cover lessons matters.
- How to find out what was missed.
- What to ask the school.
- Whether there is time to catch up.
- Which topics to rebuild first.
How often is a GCSE class taught by a non-specialist?
Less often than the headlines suggest, but it is not spread evenly, so a single class can be hit hard.
The Department for Education’s School workforce in England release, covering November 2025, found that 86.8% of secondary hours were taught by a teacher holding a relevant post-A level qualification in the subject.
That sounds reassuring, and across the system it is. But the remaining hours are not shared out fairly. They concentrate in the subjects that are hardest to recruit for and in the schools that have just lost someone, so one student can spend a whole year in the unlucky fraction.
The same release recorded 1,600 teacher vacancies, or 4 per 1,000 teachers in post, down from the previous year. Fewer vacancies is good news nationally, and no comfort at all to a Year 11 class whose physics teacher left at Christmas.

How can you tell a subject has been affected?
The exercise book tells you more than the report does, because reports are written by whoever is in post at the end.
Look for the pattern rather than any single page. A run of worksheets glued in without any working, notes copied from slides, and weeks without a teacher’s comment usually mean the class was being held rather than taught.
Then ask the student a plain question: which topics did you do this term, and could you do a question on each now? A student who has been taught properly can usually name the topics, even if they are shaky on them. One who has been covered for often cannot.
The third sign is a mock result that falls in one subject while the others hold. A drop everywhere points to something about the student. A drop in one subject, in the year the teaching changed, points to the teaching.
How to work with the school once you have spotted it is covered on our North Harrow page.
Warning signs in one subject
- Several names on the timetable in a year.
- Worksheets with no working shown.
- Long gaps in the marking.
- The student cannot list recent topics.
- A mock drop in that subject alone.
What does closing the gap involve?
A list, a diagnostic and a plan. The work is usually smaller than it feels, because the gap has edges.
Start with the specification, not the textbook. The exam board publishes the exact list of content, and comparing it against what the student has actually been taught turns a vague worry into a set of named topics.
Then test those topics. A short diagnostic separates the ones that were taught badly, which usually come back quickly, from the ones that were never taught, which need teaching from scratch. In our experience that split is often about even.
Finally, order the work by how much the topics are worth and what depends on them. In maths, a missing term of algebra blocks half the Higher paper. In science, a skipped practical can cost a six mark question but blocks nothing else.
Barkingside students mostly attend schools that run their own calendars, from Ilford County High and King Solomon High to the comprehensives towards Clayhall and Fullwell Cross, so check dates with the school. Redbridge publishes its community school calendar on the term dates page.

What if the gap has already cost a grade?
Then the student is resitting, and the missing topics are the obvious place to start.
A resit student who was taught by a carousel of cover teachers often has a surprisingly clean profile: strong on the topics from the good years, blank on the ones from the bad one. That is far more fixable than a general weakness.
Below grade 4 in English or Maths, the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding keeps a student studying the subject after Year 11, with grade 3 leading to a GCSE resit and grade 2 or below permitting Functional Skills level 2.

What does a GCSE tutor in Barkingside cost?
£30 per one-to-one lesson, with the diagnostic in the free first session.
A gap with clear edges does not need open-ended tutoring. Many families book for a defined run of weeks to close the missing topics, then stop or drop to fortnightly.
Our guide to GCSE tutoring costs sets out typical rates, and the online versus in-person guide is honest about when a local centre is the better choice.
What £30 covers

- A topic-by-topic map of what was missed.
- Practice set between lessons.
- No joining fee or package.
- A different tutor if the match is wrong.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my child has had a lot of cover lessons?
Ask them, then look at the exercise book. Long runs of worksheets, copied notes and no marking are the usual signs, and they tend to cluster in one subject rather than spread across all of them.
Is a non-specialist teacher necessarily a problem?
No. Many teach outside their degree subject very well. The risk is narrower: topics that need specialist confidence, such as the harder physics or higher tier algebra, can get covered quickly or skipped.
Should I complain to the school?
Ask first, specifically and in writing: who teaches the class, how long the arrangement will last and which topics have been covered. Most schools know about the gap already and will say what they are doing.
Can the gap be closed before the exam?
Usually, if it is found in Year 10 or the autumn of Year 11. A missing term of content is a defined list of topics, which is a much easier problem than a student who has fallen behind everywhere.
Which subjects are most affected?
Nationally the hardest posts to fill tend to be in physics, maths, computing and modern languages, but in any one school it depends on who has left and when.
What subjects do you teach?
Maths, English Language and English Literature, the sciences, Computer Science and Business Studies. Humanities when a board specialist has room.
How much is a lesson?
£30 a lesson, one to one, taught by a subject specialist.
Do you have a base in Barkingside?
No. Teaching is online only, and the business is registered in Feltham, not IG6.
