What does tutoring at the top end actually change?
Less than the marketing suggests, and more than nothing. The gains at grade 7 and above come from precision, not from covering more content, and precision is hard to teach in a room of thirty.

A student sitting on a grade 6 usually knows most of the syllabus. What they lose is marks in specific, repeatable ways: not showing method, misreading a command word, writing four paragraphs where the mark scheme rewards two developed ones, or running out of time on the last question of a paper they could have answered.
None of that is fixed by re-teaching. It is fixed by marking their actual work against the actual mark scheme, repeatedly, until the pattern breaks. That is a one-to-one job.
Worth saying plainly, because Chiswick parents get told otherwise a lot: nobody can guarantee a grade 9. Grade boundaries are set after the papers are marked, and they move with the cohort. GCSE or IGCSE, and does it matter?
It matters for the lessons, not for university. Chiswick has both state and independent students, and independent schools frequently sit IGCSE, which is a different qualification with different papers.
IGCSE and GCSE cover similar ground, but the assessment structure, the wording of questions and sometimes the required content differ. A tutor working from a GCSE past paper with an IGCSE student will get most of it right and waste the rest of the lesson.

Is Year 10 too early to start?
No, and at the top end it is arguably the better year. A student aiming for grade 8 benefits far more from a year of careful work than from a panic in April.
Year 10 gives room to be ambitious
There is time to go beyond the minimum, work through harder problems, and build the habit of showing method. Grade 8 and 9 work rewards depth, and depth takes months rather than weeks.
Year 11 is a conversion year
The content is taught. What moves the grade now is timed practice, mark scheme literacy and knowing when to leave a question. Start past papers in the autumn, not in the spring.
Mocks are the best diagnostic you own

Burnout is a real risk here

What if a grade 4 is missed anyway?
It happens in W4 as well, and the rules are the same here as anywhere. Worth knowing before results day rather than during it.
The 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated by government in July 2026, requires students aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 or above in maths and English to carry on studying the subject. Grade 3 means working towards a GCSE. Grade 2 or below allows a GCSE or Functional Skills at level 2.
A student heading into A-levels with a grade 3 in maths therefore carries an eleventh subject into a year that already has enough in it. Fixing that in the autumn rather than the spring is the difference between a manageable term and a miserable one.
Which series to aim at
- November takes Maths and English Language only, about ten weeks after results.
- Everything else waits until the following summer.
- Ten weeks converts a near miss; it does not rebuild a subject.
- Providers decide entry timing, so ask rather than assume.

Frequently asked questions
My daughter got a grade 6 and is still miserable about it. Is tutoring the answer?
Sometimes, and sometimes the answer is a conversation about what the grade is for. A grade 6 clears almost every sixth form entry requirement in the country. If the distress is about a peer comparison rather than a closed door, more tutoring is not obviously the fix.
Can you push a student from grade 7 to grade 9?
We can teach towards it. Nobody can promise it, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Grade 9 is set by a formula applied after the papers are marked, so it moves with the cohort each year.
Do you offer lessons after 7pm?
Yes. Later slots suit Chiswick households where a parent gets back from central London after six and wants to be in the house while the lesson runs.
Which GCSE subjects do you cover?
Both English GCSEs, Maths at either tier, Science as Combined or Triple, the three separate sciences, Computer Science and Business Studies. Humanities are offered when a specialist is free.
