For most students that is simply an advantage. Strong schools, experienced departments, and a peer group that takes the exams seriously.
For a minority it produces a specific kind of distress. A student holding a grade 4 or 5 in a year group where most people cleared grade 6 has a perfectly respectable set of results and feels like they have failed. A note on term dates
Richmond has a mix of community, academy and voluntary aided schools. Christ’s School on Queens Road, the borough’s only Church of England secondary, is voluntary aided, which means it sets its own dates rather than following the council calendar. Can tutoring help a student who is not actually behind?
Sometimes, and the work looks nothing like catch-up. It is closer to showing someone the evidence that they already know the thing they have decided they cannot do.
A capable student who has convinced themselves they are bad at Chemistry will avoid Chemistry revision, which makes them worse at Chemistry, which confirms the belief. Breaking that loop is a teaching problem, not a motivational one.
What tends to work is narrow and concrete. Take one topic. Do six questions on it under time. Mark them properly. Show the student the marks. Repeat with the next topic. After three weeks the story they are telling themselves has to compete with a pile of marked paper.
What does not work is adding hours. A student already doing ten GCSEs, a sport and an instrument does not have spare capacity, and filling it produces a tired student rather than a better one.
We will say that in the free session if we think it. Turning down a booking is cheaper for us than a family paying for twelve weeks of the wrong thing.
When tutoring is probably not the answer
- The student is already at their target grade and simply anxious about it.
- The timetable has no genuine gap left in it.
- The problem is sleep, not subject knowledge.
- A whole subject was chosen under pressure and is being endured.
- Nobody has looked at a marked paper to find out what is actually wrong.
The last one is the most common, and it is free to fix.

What are the resit options around Richmond?
Fewer students need them here than in most places, which is exactly why the ones who do can feel isolated. The routes are the same as everywhere else.
The condition of funding rule, updated in July 2026, keeps maths and English on the timetable for any 16 to 19 year old studying without a grade 4 in them. Grade 3 commits the student to a GCSE; grade 2 or lower leaves Functional Skills level 2 open as well.

If the borough does that well, why would my child need a tutor?
