What is the free GCSE route in Isleworth?
West Thames College on London Road runs adult GCSE courses that cost nothing for most learners. It is genuinely good, and worth knowing about before you pay anybody for anything.
The college’s GCSE Maths for Adults course is for students aged 19 or over who do not already hold a grade C or grade 4, and the page states plainly that it is free, fully funded, for adults with the right to remain in the UK. It follows the Edexcel specification and is assessed by three papers of an hour and a half each, the first without a calculator.
The English equivalent, GCSE English for Adults, follows AQA GCSE English Language and is listed as a day class on Tuesday afternoons. Evening versions of both subjects run as well, which suits anybody working during the week.
If you do not hold a grade 3 or a level 2 Functional Skills certificate, the college says that does not stop you enrolling. You sit an initial assessment instead so they can place you correctly.
One honest caveat. These are group classes on a fixed weekly slot. If your problem is one specific thing, usually algebra in maths or the reading paper in English, a room of twenty people is not where it gets solved. That is the gap one-to-one work fills.

What about Year 10 and Year 11 students?
Different job entirely. Isleworth has long-established secondaries, including Isleworth & Syon School on Ridgeway Road, and school students come to us for gaps rather than for second chances.
Year 10
Fixing something in Year 10 is cheap. One lesson usually clears a topic that went wrong in September. The same topic in March of Year 11 takes three or four, because everything stacked on top of it has become unstable too.
Most Year 10 work is diagnostic. The tutor reads recent classwork, finds the exact point understanding stopped, and rebuilds from there rather than from wherever the class happens to be now. Where two children are at different schools, the government term dates finder is the quickest way to line the calendars up.
One practical note on scheduling. Hounslow publishes a term calendar for community schools but states that academies, foundation and voluntary aided schools set their own dates, so send us your child’s actual school calendar rather than the council one.

Year 11
By Year 11 the content is mostly taught. What separates grades is technique: reading the command word, showing method, and managing the clock so a four-mark question does not eat eleven minutes.
Mock papers become the raw material. The tutor marks like an examiner, then works backwards from where the marks actually went, which is a different lesson from re-teaching content.
Timed practice should start in autumn. A sensible revision timetable beats an intense one that collapses in February.

Who has to resit, and when?
Age decides the route. A 17 year old and a 25 year old sitting the same paper are on completely different pathways, with different funding and different providers.
Anyone aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 in maths and English has to keep studying it, under the condition of funding rule updated in July 2026. Holding a grade 3 means a GCSE route specifically; grade 2 or lower opens up Functional Skills level 2 as well.
For adults aged 19 and over, the route is a college course like the ones West Thames runs, or a private entry through an exam centre if a classroom timetable does not fit your working life.

Does the exam board change anything?
Quite a lot. Isleworth learners often arrive on a different specification from the one they sat at school, particularly adults returning after several years away.
We teach AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC or Eduqas, and Cambridge IGCSE where a tutor is free for it. The board changes topic coverage, question wording and mark allocation, so a tutor working from the wrong specification loses half of every session to material that will not come up.
Adult learners in particular should check this. If you last sat GCSE Maths on a different board a decade ago, the paper structure has changed underneath you, never mind the grading scale.

Can I get a free GCSE course in Isleworth instead of paying for a tutor?

My child is 17 and at college. Do the free adult courses apply to them?
No. The adult courses are for learners aged 19 and over. A 16 to 18 year old is covered by the condition of funding rule instead, and studies English or maths as part of their main programme.
Which GCSE subjects do you tutor?
Maths, English Language and English Literature, Science as Combined or Triple, the individual sciences, Computer Science and Business Studies. Humanities are covered where a tutor is free.
