Which entry counts?
The first one, for the school’s published measures. Every entry counts for the student, who keeps whichever grade is best.
The key stage 4 discounting and early entry guidance sets it out: only a pupil’s first entry to a qualification counts towards the school’s performance measures, and where a student sits a GCSE early the result counts when they reach the end of key stage 4.
The same rule appears in the secondary accountability measures guidance, which governs how Attainment 8 and Progress 8 are calculated.
The policy history explains why. Changes to early entry at GCSE introduced the first-entry rule to stop repeated entry being used as a tactic, because students entered early and often were on average doing worse than students taught the full course and entered once.
For a family, the practical consequence is simple: an early grade that disappoints can still be improved for the student, but the school cannot undo it in its own figures.

These two columns are the reason early entry can feel like a gamble taken on someone else’s behalf.
When is early entry a good idea?
When the student is genuinely ready, and when there is a plan for the year that opens up afterwards.
The clearest good case is a student comfortably working at the top of the course a year early, with a school that will move them onto something more demanding once the exam is done. The subject continues, it just continues differently.
It also works for a student carrying a heavy option block, where spreading eleven subjects across two summers genuinely reduces the load in Year 11 rather than merely moving it.
The weak case is entering a borderline student early in the hope of banking a grade 4. If it lands, the student stops the subject a year before they were finished with it. If it does not, the first entry is already on the record and the work has to happen anyway.

How should an early entry be prepared for?
As a full GCSE, because that is what it is. The only thing early about it is the date.
The common failure is treating an early paper as a rehearsal. Students told a resit is available in a year revise accordingly, sit a paper they were not ready for, and produce a grade that follows them into the school’s figures permanently.
The preparation itself is no different from Year 11 preparation: full coverage of the specification, timed papers on the real structure, and the gaps found from marked work rather than from a feeling.
What does change is the runway. There is a year less of it, so the diagnosis has to be earlier and more honest, and a subject that is clearly not ready in the February before entry is worth raising with the school while withdrawal is still possible.

Can an early grade be improved later?
For the student, yes. A later entry can raise the grade they hold, and that is the grade they present.
A student who takes maths in Year 10 and gets a grade 4 can sit it again in Year 11 and hold the better result. Nobody applying to a sixth form is obliged to present the weaker one.
For students leaving Year 11 still below grade 4 in maths or English, the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated in July 2026, keeps the subject running at college, with grade 3 pointing at the GCSE and grade 2 or below allowing Functional Skills level 2.
Maths and English Language also have a November series, which is the fastest of these routes and the one most often assumed rather than confirmed.

Can a student take a GCSE in Year 9 or Year 10?
Yes. Schools can enter students early, and some do it routinely in maths, a language or computing. The decision sits with the school rather than the family.
Does an early grade still count?
For the student it counts permanently. For school performance measures only the first entry in a subject counts, and early entries are included when the student reaches the end of key stage 4.
So a resit cannot improve the school’s figures?
Not in the performance tables, no. A later attempt can improve the grade the student holds and uses, but the first entry is the one the measures record.
Why does that rule exist?
