What arrives, and when?
A results slip in August from the school, and the certificates themselves some months later from the exam board.
On results day the student receives a statement from their centre listing subjects and grades. It is not the certificate. It is enough for a sixth form or college place, which is why most families never notice the distinction.
The certificates follow later in the autumn, issued by each board the student was entered with. A student taking subjects across three boards gets three certificates, and a family expecting one document often assumes something has gone missing.
Results are also published nationally each August, and the exam results data from the boards’ joint council is where the subject by subject picture for the whole country sits.

How do you prove a GCSE years later?
Through the exam board, which issues a certified statement of results rather than reprinting the original certificate.
This comes up more than you would expect. A nursing application, a teaching course, a professional registration or a move abroad can all require evidence of a grade 4 in maths and English long after the certificate went into a drawer and out of memory.
The government’s guidance on a replacement exam certificate is direct about the route: contact the awarding body, expect to prove your identity, and expect to pay a fee. For GCSEs, O levels, CSEs and A levels the boards issue a certified statement of results rather than a duplicate certificate.

What does this change about Year 10 and Year 11?
It puts the stakes in the right place. The grade is permanent and the route to it is not, which is an argument for acting early rather than an argument for panic.
A GCSE grade follows a person for a very long time. That is the honest reason maths and English carry the weight they do, and why a grade 3 turns into a recurring obligation rather than a closed chapter.
What follows from that is not more pressure on a fifteen year old. It is a preference for fixing something in Year 10, when a weak topic is a two hour job, over fixing it in May of Year 11, when it has become a term of work.
It also argues for care about which subjects a student is entered for at all. An entry that is never going to yield a grade the student can use is worth questioning in Year 10, while the timetable can still absorb a change.

Do resits produce another certificate?
Yes. A resit is a fresh entry and produces its own result, and the better grade is the one that gets used.
An adult sitting maths again at twenty five ends up with a new statement of results for that subject. The earlier grade does not disappear, and nobody is obliged to present it.
Highams Park students leaving Year 11 below grade 4 in maths or English fall under the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated in July 2026, which keeps the subject running alongside a college course.
For adults past nineteen the route is usually a funded college course rather than the school system, and the certificate that comes out of it is issued the same way.
For resit students
