Triple Science or Combined Science?
The decision gets made in Year 9 by families with almost no information, and it shapes two years of workload. It is worth twenty minutes of proper thought.
Triple Science means separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics: three qualifications, roughly a third more content than Combined, and more required practicals. Combined Science is worth two GCSEs on a single grade scale and covers the same three disciplines in less depth.
The persistent myth is that Combined Science closes the door on A-level sciences. At most sixth forms it does not. What matters is the grade achieved and the specific entry requirements of the school you are applying to, so check those rather than relying on what somebody said at a parents evening.
It is also worth knowing that neither route locks in a grade. Boundaries are set after papers are marked each year by the exam boards under Ofqual, the qualifications regulator, so the same mark can land differently from one summer to the next.
Where Triple genuinely helps is a student who likes science and wants the extra depth. Where it hurts is a student taking it for status while quietly running out of hours for everything else. We see the second version more often than the first.
Teddington has a strong local pull towards science careers. The National Physical Laboratory, the UK’s national measurement institute, has sat on Hampton Road in Teddington for decades, which is not a small thing for a town of this size and does turn up in conversations about what a student wants to do next.

How do you teach GCSE Science one to one?
By treating Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three subjects, because they are. A single tutor covering all three is a compromise that shows up around grade 7.
Biology
Heavy on recall and precise terminology, so the work is about answering the question asked rather than writing everything remembered about the topic.
Chemistry
Where most students lose ground, usually on moles, equations and the quantitative questions that sit at the top of the mark range.
Physics
Effectively applied maths for a lot of students. Rearranging equations and handling units correctly recovers marks quickly.
Required practicals
Examinable, and routinely underprepared. Method, variables and sources of error come up every year in some form.

When is the right time to start?
Earlier than most families do. For Triple Science in particular, the content that causes trouble arrives late in Year 11, when there is no time left to absorb it.
Year 10
A topic fixed in October costs about one lesson. The same topic in March of Year 11 costs three or four, because everything taught on top of it has been built on sand.
For Triple Science students, Year 10 is also when the extra content starts to bite. Falling behind here is quiet, and it does not show up in a report until the mocks.

Year 11
The syllabus is largely delivered. Grades now move on technique: command words, showing method and time management across six science papers, which is a lot of exam hall in a fortnight.
Past papers should begin in the autumn. Leaving them until April means discovering a problem at the point where there is no time to fix it. Our revision timetable guide covers how to pace that.
What happens if Maths or English falls short?
The subject follows the student into sixth form or college. That is a funding rule rather than a school preference, and it applies across the borough.
Under the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated in July 2026, a student aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 or above in maths and English has to keep studying it. A grade 3 means a GCSE route; grade 2 or below allows GCSE or Functional Skills level 2.
This matters particularly for the science route. A student aiming at A-level Chemistry with a grade 3 in maths is carrying a problem into a subject built on it, and no amount of enthusiasm for Chemistry compensates for weak algebra.
Timing the resit
- November covers Maths and English Language only.
- All other subjects wait for the following summer.
- The provider decides when a student is entered, not the family.
- Ten weeks is enough for a near miss and not for a rebuild.

Frequently asked questions
Should my child take Triple Science or Combined Science?
Triple if they enjoy science and can carry the extra content without dropping other subjects. Combined Science is worth two GCSEs and does not close off A-level science at most sixth forms, whatever the playground says. Check the entry requirements of the sixth forms you are actually considering.
How much extra content is Triple Science?
Roughly a third more than Combined, assessed across six papers instead of six shorter ones, with more required practicals. It is the extra topics at the end of each unit that usually cause trouble, because they arrive late in Year 11.
Do you provide three separate science tutors?
Yes, where the student needs it. A Biology specialist teaching Physics is a compromise, and for Triple Science students at the top end it shows.
Which other GCSE subjects do you cover?
Maths, English Language and Literature, Computer Science and Business Studies, alongside the sciences. History, Geography and Religious Studies depend on tutor availability.
My child is at Teddington School. Do their term dates match the council calendar?
Check directly with the school. Academies and voluntary aided schools across both Richmond and Hounslow set their own term and holiday dates, so a household with children at different schools can end up running two calendars.
