Start with the boundary. SW14 sits at the eastern edge of Richmond upon Thames, with Wandsworth immediately across and Hammersmith and Fulham a short way north. School choice here crosses those lines constantly, in both directions, and the local authorities do not coordinate their calendars.
The practical result is a household running two or three sets of term dates. One child breaks up a week before another. Half terms land in different weeks. A fixed weekly slot at a tuition centre stops working somewhere around the end of October.
Then the second thing. East Sheen is a modest local centre rather than a commercial one, so it does not carry the density of tuition providers you find in Richmond or across the river in Putney. A parent looking locally is choosing from whoever happens to live nearby and be free on the right evening, which is a poor way to pick somebody to teach Chemistry.

Richmond upon Thames is among the strongest boroughs in the capital for GCSE attainment, and the figures are set out on our Richmond page. What East Sheen adds is the boundary: a student living here may be measured against a Richmond cohort, a Wandsworth one, or an independent-school one, depending on where they go.
For most students that is straightforwardly an advantage: experienced departments, stable staffing, and a year group that treats the exams seriously.
For the minority below that line it produces something specific. A student holding a grade 4 in a cohort where most people cleared grade 6 has a perfectly usable qualification and feels like they have failed. The grade opens the same doors it would anywhere. It just does not feel that way in the common room.

Year 10 or Year 11?
Year 10 if the choice is genuinely open, because the same problem costs several times more to fix a year later.
Year 10
A topic that stops making sense in October takes roughly one lesson to repair. The same topic left until March of Year 11 takes three or four, because everything taught on top of it has been unreliable since.
Most Year 10 work is quiet and diagnostic rather than dramatic. A tutor works back through recent books, locates the exact page where things stopped making sense, and starts again from there.

Year 11
The content is largely delivered. Grades move on technique: reading the command word, showing method so method marks survive, and managing the clock across a fortnight of papers.
Marked mocks are the raw material. A tutor reads them as an examiner would and works backwards from where the marks went.

And if a grade 4 is missed?
The subject carries on into sixth form or college, wherever that turns out to be. It is a funding condition rather than a school choice.
The 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated in July 2026, requires any student aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 in maths and English to keep studying it. Grade 3 commits them to a GCSE. Grade 2 or below allows Functional Skills level 2 as well.
Richmond upon Thames College in Twickenham is the borough’s main post-16 provider, with English and maths timetabled alongside a main study programme for 16 to 18 year olds and part-time level 2 courses for adults over 19.
Two series, two different jobs
- November takes Maths and English Language only.
- Roughly ten weeks from results day, so it suits a near miss.
- Every other subject waits for the following summer.

Our children go to school in two different boroughs. Is that unusual in East Sheen?
Not remotely. SW14 sits on the Richmond and Wandsworth boundary with Hammersmith and Fulham a short way north, so a single street can send children to three authorities. It is a scheduling problem rather than an educational one, and it is solvable.
How do I check term dates when the schools are in different boroughs?
Use the government term dates finder, which lists schools individually rather than by council. Assuming your own borough calendar applies to a school across the boundary is the usual way a weekly slot falls apart in October.
Richmond results are strong. Does that mean tutoring is unnecessary here?

Which GCSE subjects do you cover?
