Online GCSE Tutoring in Hammersmith

One-to-one lessons for Year 10, Year 11 and resit students, £30 per lesson

Online GCSE tutoring in Hammersmith for school students and for adults going back to finish English or maths. Hammersmith is better served than most of the towns on this site, and the honest advice here starts by saying so.

Lessons run one-to-one over video at times that suit the household, including later evenings. Nobody travels, which matters when the alternative is crossing W6 at half past four.

The first session is free and it is a real lesson. If the tutor thinks a college place would serve you better, they will say that instead of taking the booking.

Who books us in Hammersmith

  • Adults topping up an evening college class.
  • Year 10 and Year 11 students at local secondaries.
  • Shift workers who cannot hold a fixed weekly evening.
  • Triple Science students needing three specialists.
  • Resitters carrying a grade 3 into a college course.

Should you use the college instead of paying us?

Quite possibly, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have booked twelve lessons. Hammersmith has something most towns on this site do not.

West London College operates across three sites, Hammersmith, Ealing Green and Southall. Its adult GCSE English and maths courses run in the daytime at all three, and in the evening at Hammersmith and Ealing Green. Southall gets no evening class at all, which is why the advice on that page reads very differently from this one.

The funding is genuinely good. Free study is listed for anyone who will have turned 19 by 31 August before the course begins, lives in London, has the legal right to remain in the UK for a year or more, and has not already achieved a grade 4. There is also help listed for books, travel, course materials and childcare.

So if you are an adult in W6 without a grade 4, and a weekly evening class fits your life, the sensible move is to enrol. It costs nothing and the teaching is real.

Where one to one still earns its money is narrower. A class of twenty covers a syllabus at one speed and cannot stop for the two or three things that are actually costing you the grade, which is usually algebra in maths or the reading paper in English. And a fixed Tuesday evening is no use at all if your shifts rotate.

  • Evening classes at Hammersmith and Ealing Green.
  • Free for eligible adults aged 19 and over without a grade 4.
  • Eligibility includes London residency and the right to stay for 12 months.
  • Support listed for books, travel, materials and childcare.

As published by the college. Confirm this year’s timetable and your own eligibility with them directly.

Who is actually required to resit?

Only the 16 to 19 group, and it is a funding condition rather than anything a school chooses.

The 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated by government in July 2026, requires students aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 or above in maths and English to keep studying that subject. Holding a grade 3 commits them to a GCSE. At grade 2 or below, Functional Skills level 2 becomes an alternative.

For adults over 19 nothing is compulsory. The reason so many do it anyway is that a grade 4 in maths and English sits in the entry requirements for nursing, teaching, the police, most apprenticeships and a great many university courses.

Why are the council term dates only a guide here?

Because Hammersmith and Fulham says so itself, more bluntly than most boroughs do.

The council publishes a calendar and labels it guide dates only, adding that "all schools and academies set their own term dates so dates may vary from school to school". For 2026/27 its autumn term runs from Wednesday 2 September to Friday 18 December 2026, with the summer term ending on Thursday 22 July 2027.

Most boroughs bury that caveat in a footnote. Here it is the headline, and it is worth taking at face value: a large share of secondaries in W6 are academies and set their own dates, including the five staff training days the calendar leaves to governing bodies.

The practical version is simple. Do not book anything weekly against the council calendar. Check the school itself through the government term dates finder, send us what it says, and we will schedule against that.

Hammersmith and Fulham, 2026/27

  • Autumn term: Wednesday 2 September to Friday 18 December 2026.
  • October half term: Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026.
  • Spring term: Monday 4 January to Thursday 25 March 2027.
  • February half term: Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2027.
  • Summer term: Monday 12 April to Thursday 22 July 2027.
  • May half term: Monday 31 May to Friday 4 June 2027.

Guide dates only. Individual schools and academies set their own.

How does an online lesson run?

Video, a shared whiteboard, and the student writing on paper. The tutor follows the method rather than marking a final answer.

  1. Tell us the situation

Subject, age or year group, exam board, and whether a college course is already running.

  2. Free one-to-one session

A real lesson, no card details, then a straight report.

  3. Match and schedule

A tutor confirmed and a slot agreed around college or work.

  4. Weekly lessons with a target

One focus per lesson, practice after, papers from early on.

  5. Honest feedback

What moved and what did not. Wrong match, different tutor.

The whole process is set out on how it works, and our online versus in-person guide is honest about the cases where a room beats a screen.

What does a GCSE tutor in Hammersmith cost?

£30 for a full one-to-one lesson, with nothing to pay to start and no bundle to commit to.

Agency rates in W6 climb well past that, and a fair share of the difference is commission rather than teaching. One published price means a comparison takes half a minute.

And to repeat the point above, because it matters more than our margin: if you qualify for a funded college place and the timetable fits, take the college place. Our guide to GCSE tutoring costs sets out the wider market.

What £30 covers

  • A full one-to-one lesson with a subject specialist.
  • Planning against your exam board and tier.
  • Past paper work marked against the real mark scheme.
  • Progress feedback in plain language.
  • A different tutor if the first match is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free adult GCSE course in Hammersmith?

Yes. West London College runs adult GCSE English and maths at its Hammersmith and Fulham college, in the daytime and in the evening, and lists it as free for eligible adults aged 19 and over who do not already hold a grade 4 in the subject.

Am I eligible for the free place?

The college lists free study for adults who will be 19 or over on 31 August before the course starts, live in London, and have the legal right to stay in the UK for at least 12 months. It also lists possible help with books, travel, materials and childcare. Confirm your own position with them.

Hammersmith has an evening class, so why would I pay for a tutor?

You might not need to. If the evening class fits and you qualify, take it. One to one earns its place alongside it, on the two or three topics a class of twenty cannot stop for, or when shift work makes a fixed weekly evening impossible.

My child’s school term dates are not the same as the council calendar. Is that normal here?

Entirely. Hammersmith and Fulham publishes its dates as guide dates only, and says outright that all schools and academies set their own. Check yours directly and send it to us.

Which GCSE subjects do you cover?

Maths, both English GCSEs, Combined or Triple Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics taught separately, Computer Science and Business Studies. Humanities when a specialist has capacity.

What does it cost?

£30 for a one-to-one lesson. No registration fee, no agency commission and no package to buy before you have met the tutor.

Do you teach adults as well as school students?

Yes. Adults returning to finish maths or English are a steady share of the work, and the lessons look different: less syllabus coverage, more targeted repair of the things that went wrong first time.

Can lessons run late in the evening?

Yes, and they often do here. Later slots are usually easier to book than the four to six window.
