What changes between Year 10 and Year 11?
A lot, and treating the two years the same is the most common mistake we see. Year 10 is about closing gaps while there is still time to close them. Year 11 is about converting what a student already knows into marks on a paper.
Year 10
Year 10 is the cheap year. A topic that goes unfixed in October costs one lesson to repair. The same topic, unfixed until March of Year 11, costs four, because by then it is tangled up with everything built on top of it.
Work in Year 10 tends to be diagnostic. A tutor goes back through recent classwork, finds the point where understanding stopped, and rebuilds from there. It is unglamorous and it is the highest-value tutoring anyone buys.

Year 11
By Year 11 the content is largely taught. What separates a grade 4 from a grade 5 is usually exam technique: reading the command word, showing method, managing time, and knowing when to leave a question and come back.
Mock papers become the raw material. A tutor marks them the way an examiner would, then works backwards from the dropped marks. That is a very different lesson from re-teaching a topic the student already half knows.
Past papers, mark schemes and timed practice run through the whole year rather than appearing in April. Building a GCSE revision timetable early is worth more than any amount of last-minute cramming.
What happens if your child misses a grade 4?
They keep studying the subject. That is not a school policy, it is a funding rule, and it catches a lot of Feltham families by surprise in the week after results day.
Government guidance updated on 24 July 2026 sets out the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding. Students aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without GCSE maths and English at grade 4 or above have to carry on studying that subject. A student holding grade 3 must work towards a GCSE. A student at grade 2 or below can work towards either a GCSE or Functional Skills level 2.
What that means in practice is that a grade 3 is not a stopping point. It is an instruction to keep going, usually alongside a full college or sixth form timetable, with fewer lesson hours than the student had at school.

Which exam board does your child sit?
It matters more than most parents realise, and a surprising number of students do not know. Two schools a mile apart in Feltham can sit different Science specifications with different required practicals.
