What actually happens to a grade 3 after Year 11?
The subject does not stop. It follows the student into whatever they do next, usually with fewer taught hours and less time to think about it.
The rule is a funding condition rather than a school policy. Government guidance on the 16 to 19 maths and English condition of funding, updated on 24 July 2026, requires students aged 16 to 19 on a study programme without grade 4 or above in maths and English to keep studying that subject. Grade 3 commits the student to a GCSE. At grade 2 or below, Functional Skills level 2 is permitted instead.
Richmond upon Thames College, part of the HRUC group and based on Egerton Road in Twickenham, puts it directly: for 16 to 18 year olds on a full-time programme, the aim is that students leave having achieved the best English and maths grades they can, and all students work towards the equivalent of grade 4 or 5 or above. Classes are scheduled around the main study programme.
One detail that catches families out every autumn. Being required to keep studying the subject is not the same as being entered for the next exam. The provider decides when a student is ready to sit it. A student can spend a full term on maths and still not be entered in November.

Year 10 is the cheap year

Which exam board should we be working from?
Whichever one the student will actually sit, which is not always the one they sat before. Resitters in particular often move boards when they change provider.
We teach AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC or Eduqas, plus Cambridge IGCSE where a tutor is available for it. Boards differ in topic coverage, question wording and how marks are distributed, so working from the wrong specification quietly loses half of every lesson.
A student resitting through a college may well be entered on a different board from their old school. Check it at enrolment rather than assuming, because it changes which past papers are worth doing.

That is the college’s decision, not an automatic entry. Colleges decide when a student is ready to sit the paper, and being made to keep studying the subject is not the same as being entered for the next exam. Ask his tutor directly rather than assuming.
Does he have to keep doing maths at all?
Yes, if he is 16 to 19 and on a study programme without grade 4 in maths and English. Government guidance updated in July 2026 puts anyone holding grade 3 on a GCSE route rather than Functional Skills.
